Wedding Live Bands – Lion Dance Singapore

Your first dance as a newly married couple will be a moment you will never forget. And apart from the ceremony and the speeches, the entertainment at a wedding is one of the things that guests will remember most about the whole day.

But why choose a live band for your wedding’s entertainment? Well, your only other real option is a DJ. And a DJ does not have the same intimacy or wow factor as a wedding live band. If you are looking for a personal, exciting, memorable entertainment option for your big day – nothing can beat quality live music performed by talented musicians.

Here are our top 4 essential things to consider when choosing the perfect wedding live band.

What Kind Of Music Do You Want?

This is the most important thing out of all of the tips on this list. What kind of vibe do you want to have at your reception? The style of music will set the tone for the whole evening.

Are you the kind of couple that would like a traditional romantic atmosphere? Then perhaps you should consider a traditional acoustic guitar musician, or maybe a smooth jazz band to get people slow dancing all night long.

Or perhaps you are the kind of couple that wants people to let their hair down at their reception. The kind of couple who wants things to get a little bit wild (but not too wild!). If this sounds like you then consider getting something like an awesome rock band to get the party started!

Perhaps you both have a favorite artist in common. If so consider hiring a tribute act. Nothing goes down better at a wedding than a live performance from a top tribute act, who looks and sounds just like the real thing. A tribute act creates an experience your guests will never forget, and can provide them with hours of songs they know and love.

Remember that the song you choose for your first dance does not have to be the same style as the rest of the evening’s entertainment. Even a rock band can play beautiful, gentle, romantic songs if you ask them to.

How Lion Dance Singapore Can Help: We work closely with a wide range of the most talented and experienced artists in Singapore. We can provide professional passionate wedding live bands in almost any genre – ranging from slow classical music, all the way through to heavy metal rock.

Does The Band Take Requests?

Your wedding day is all about you, if you have songs that you simply must hear on your big day – it’s the band’s job to be able to perform them for you.

Any good wedding live band will be able to learn and perform a few new songs that you pick for them. Simply provide them with a CD and sheet music well ahead of time.

This being said it’s important to ensure the band already knows how to play several songs that you already know and love. Every wedding live band should have a long list of songs that they know how to play for you to inspect. But any band should be more than happy to learn a song or two for your wedding.

But just remember – asking them to learn 10 or 20 new songs is probably a little bit unrealistic in most cases.

How Lion Dance Singapore Can Help: With a huge range of artists in our portfolio we are able to match the perfect wedding live band to the perfect couple. We are confident you will be satisfied with the song lists of the artists we have available. All of our artists are happy to learn an extra special song or two for your wedding. So you can rest assured if you have something you specifically want to be played at your reception.

How Much Experience Does The Band Have?

Your wedding day is the most important day of your life. It is imperative that you work with professionals who know the ins and outs of wedding entertainment. People will remember the live music at your wedding for all the right reasons if you choose your performer carefully. But if you choose an inexperienced performer that makes an awful mistake, it will be the only thing people remember about the whole day.

A quick Google search will provide you with wedding music horror stories that you would not wish on your worst enemy. Drunken band members, cussing on the microphone, equipment failure, and failing to turn up are all disasters that are unfortunately much more common than you might think.

Check that any wedding live band you are considering hiring has extensive experience in performing at weddings. Ask for references and videos of past performances if possible to get an idea of how they sound.

How Lion Dance Singapore Can Help: All of our artists are highly trained professionals that have decades of combined experience in delivering the perfect performance at any wedding. They will arrive at the venue on time, every time and interact with you and your guests with professionalism at all times.

Book Ahead Of Time

Many of the best wedding live bands are often booked well in advance. Organizing the entertainment should be the second most important thing you tackle when planning a wedding (second only to booking the venue).

Start looking around at various artists as soon as possible. This will give you plenty of time to watch previous performances and make an informed decision from a much wider selection of options.

It’s not just availability that will be helped by booking ahead of time, artists need time to practice and perfect any special requests you might have. Giving them enough time to properly learn these songs will ensure your requests are perfect (and it may even allow them to learn an extra song or two for you).

Sound Systems – Why you would need to rent one

So let’s presume that you have now found the perfect live music for your wedding. The artist you have booked has confirmed the dates, you have given them your song list and they are learning one or two special songs for you. Great job!

Just one more thing…

Without an adequate sound system, your guests are not going to be able to hear the music you have spent so much time trying to make perfect for your big day.

Not having the correct sound system for your venue can be a disaster. Countless weddings each year are ruined by couples trying to cut corners with inadequate audio equipment. For example, underpowered systems can make the vocalist far too quiet (ruining the entire performance) or incorrectly configured systems can make the room screech with ear-shattering feedback frequently.

With so much thought and emotion being put into the choice of your musicians and their music, it’s wise to put a little bit of effort into giving them the right tools for the job.

Sound system hire is not expensive, and it transforms your evening’s entertainment into something your guests will never forget.

Let’s take a look at some common questions:

Doesn’t my venue already have speakers?

This is a common misconception that many people make when they are planning their first wedding – and it’s an easy mistake to make. If you are having an indoor wedding, there is a good chance that there will be some kind of amplifier and speakers already installed.

However, these speakers are almost always designed for use with a microphone and are only designed to amplify people talking at normal volumes. While they will probably be acceptable for amplifying the speaking of the ceremony, they are almost always unsuitable for use with a live band.

Doesn’t my wedding live band have speakers?

This really depends on the band. Most reputable wedding bands will have their own sound system that they would be happy to rent to you. (This is not usually included in the price that they quote you for the evening’s entertainment.)

Hiring your sound system from the musicians themselves is one of the best ways to ensure everything goes smoothly on your big day. While all good wedding bands will be able to set up and work with any kind of sound system, it’s best for them to use a system they are familiar with.
By using a known system the band can cut down on the amount of time required for its setup and operation. This cuts down on the likelihood of any accidents occurring, and it means they can spend more sound checking and getting the perfect sound when they arrive at your venue.

How Lion Dance Singapore Can Help

We have a wide range of professional sound systems available for hire in a huge range of sizes – suitable for any venue large or small. And as you would expect, our rates are some of the most competitive in the industry.

All of our artists are personally familiar with the equipment we have available and they have extensive experience in expertly fine tuning our equipment to the specific acoustic properties of any venue.

Things to Consider When Finding a Live Band for Your Wedding

If you are a couple who is about to get hitched, it can never be denied that there are heaps of details that you need to attend to, from the complex ones to the tiny little elements like the bridal gown down, wedding cake to the pretty souvenirs that you are supposed to give to your guests at the end of the wedding reception.

Aside from these things, you also need to consider the kind of entertainment that you are to provide to your guests during the reception. You need to choose someone who will offer a great musical entertainment that you, your family and friends will greatly enjoy. This is why it is important that you decide whether you will be hiring a DJ, play a pre-recorded set list or opt for a live band that will be able to entertain your guests.

There really is no substitute for a live music because it is guaranteed to connect your guests and make them stay with their friends much longer, especially on the dance floor. Having a live band could also potentially enhance your wedding video.

Hiring a wedding live band, like saying “yes” to the dress, is not a real walk in the park, which could sometimes turn a rather tamed bride into a “bridezilla.” However, this should not really be happening if, initially, you have already made up your minds on whether you would want your wedding reception to have a party vibe or just a simple and laid-back atmosphere.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Live Band

Music is an important aspect of a wedding as it is something that can effectively establish the way that the event would flow, and, most especially, music allows you to enjoy and celebrate with your loved ones.

A wedding live band will provide a sophisticated and intimate vibe to your wedding and a thrill that will guarantee that your guests are kept entertained all throughout the event.

There are numerous choices of bands that you could actually choose – from those who play the classics to those who go for an all-around party vibe. However, it is strongly advised that you choose a wedding live band that offers a wide variety of music so that each and every one of your guests will be able to enjoy your wedding reception.

But how do you go about choosing the right wedding live band that will surely provide the kind of entertainment that will be remembered by your loved ones for a very long time? Below are some of the things that couples need to consider:

1. Research.

A personal recommendation is always the best kind of endorsement, that’s why you need to make sure that you ask your relatives, friends and colleagues to learn if they know someone who provides excellent live music during wedding receptions. But, you need to remember that one’s taste in music may differ from your preferred type of music.

Also, one of the most helpful tools that you can use is the internet. This is where you will be able to find most of the bands showing samples of their work through YouTube, social media accounts or even their own websites. With this, you will be able to listen to their demos and see how well they perform. But it is important to note that recorded songs are far different from a live performance.

It is also vital that you consider the band’s expertise and experience, as seasoned performers can usually go with the flow or alter some things up should something unexpected happens.

With this in mind, you can start researching at least five months before the wedding day and decide which musical direction will perfectly fit the kind of atmosphere that you have planned. And if in case you are more interested in something out of the box, then you have to be more thorough in your research.

2. Repertoire.

It is rather important that you choose the perfect live band that will suit your musical preferences and the choices of music that will be played during that special day in order to please your guests. However, most wedding live bands play different types of genre like songs from the 1970s to today’s hits.

During your meeting with the band, the bandleader is supposed to present to you a list of songs where you can choose the type of music and the songs that you would want them to perform. Sometimes, couples select genres that range from swing, the fifties favorites to Motown and disco. But if you opt to have the live band play more unusual pieces, you can have them add it to their list. You may also want to take into account your guests’ taste in music because, as the event progresses, they will surely be starting to ask or request for a change in genre. However, if a live band needs to learn a new piece, then they may ask for an additional fee that will cover for their rehearsal time and cost for the music arrangement. With this, you will be ensured that the band will be able to bring the party to life.

Now, if you have a wedding planner or if you are talking to an entertainment agency, they will help you determine your musical needs and cost as well as find the right musicians. These agencies will provide you the chance to audition several bands by listening to their demos or by letting you go to an event where the live band performs. They are also extremely helpful in providing suggestions when picking specific songs, so there is no need to be wary as regards to what you really want from the very beginning.

3. Budget.

With regard to this aspect, it is always good to be honest and upfront about what you can and cannot afford, as being frank about the price range that you are willing to spend allows the wedding coordinator or the entertainment agency to recommend live bands that will provide the most entertainment value but still staying within your allotted budget.

To give you a picture on how wedding live band bookings are typically set, some live bands are likely to quote prices according to a maximum of 3 x 45 minutes. However, these sets may actually differ depending on the performer that you book or hire.

Live bands are usually hired based on the number of minutes that they are going to perform and generally have flat rates for these periods of time, and it is always courteous that you offer food for the performers as they should already be at the venue even before their performance to set their instruments up and do sound checks.

4. Logistics.

There are varied advantages in having different groups and line-ups of live bands because larger live bands provide the most flexibility and are capable of performing a wide variety of music. Also, some large band line-ups can perform background music with jazz music and then shift to a fully functioning band set. Smaller bands, however, has also their own advantages like not taking up too much space in your venue. It’s also not just about the number of persons on stage that need to be taken care of, but as well as the number of equipment and instruments that every performer brings such as microphones, amps, PA and their corresponding wires and cables that may take a significant space at your venue. Smaller live band groups with fewer instruments mean that they can perform different sets at different areas.

5. Venue.

One of the many important things to consider when booking your wedding reception venue is to make sure they have a sound limiter device also known as environmental noise control system installed in their function area. Sound limiters are tools that are used to measure the sound pressure level of environmental noise and to know what it is set at, as this could pose some major problems for the live band. This device controls electricity supply to the equipment of the performers using designated sockets and, if it detects that the sound pressure level of the environmental noise exceeds the pre-set level, the power supply that is provided for the band is cut off and is then reset.

Some venues that have sound limiters set these devices to a very low level that will surely disrupt the live band’s performance; that is why it is a good idea to ask the venue if they have these devices installed and if so what is it set at. You would not want your special night ruined because of the continuous disruption of music.

You may also need to see if the band has Portable Appliance Test certificates as all professional bands should have them to prove that their electrical equipment and instruments are tested for safety. Relative to this, you should make sure that the live band that you are hiring is willing to provide all these requirements and this should not cost you anything, as this is solely their responsibility.

6. Sets.

Band performances usually vary according to your preference; however, most live bands offer two (2) or three (3) sets during a specific event. Normally, a wedding reception starts with the couple’s first dance followed by a 3 x 40-minute set, usually ending at midnight. This would add up to a total of two hours of performance time. However, some bands may provide 2 x 45 sets, performance times actually depends upon the band that you hire.

7. Breaks.

It is important not to forget to talk about the number of breaks that the performers are going to take. Normally, for a four-hour wedding reception, the band takes three to four breaks that are one twenty-minute break for meals and the rest at about ten or fifteen minutes. If you have agreed that the band plays continuously, then, it is up to the band members how they are going to take alternate breaks so that there will be no interruption in their performance.

With these major points of thought, you can be assured of finding the perfect live band for your wedding that will surely make your guests happy by sharing with them the dances and laughter as well as your memorable songs. This makes it more important for you when picking the right wedding live band.
